Scalp Micro Pigmentation FAQ

Please email info@hairandrepair.co.uk if your question is not answered below.

Perfectly suited for both men and women, SMP is a low-maintenance solution to regain your confidence.

We match natural ink pigment to your own hair colour, and use micro-needles to mimic the appearance of real hair follicles. This enhances the appearance of your natural hairline and desired thickness and density.

The procedure can be used to straighten or thicken the hairline, disguise hair thinning, camouflage scars, cover alopecia and many other ways to make you feel and look your best.

Most clients will need a minimum of 3 sessions. Depending on your individual circumstances, you  may need a 4th session, e.g. you have oily-type skin.

The visual result of your treatment cannot be determined until we have completed a final touch-up.

Guaranteed results of healed treatment cannot be determined, as all aspects of your treatment requirements and healing will be based on your own skin type and skin care routines, as well as your own health and daily routines.

Touch up visits 30 - 45 days after procedure.

Every person's skin will heal and peel at different times and different amounts. You'll find our detailed Aftercare plan in FAQ!

Yes. The British Fatwa Council ruled in December 2022 that SMP may be permissible under Islamic law as it is considered a restoration process of an ailment rather than a permanent alteration to the body.

SMP ink is specially formulated with finer pigment particles compared to traditional tattoo ink. This enables greater precision and accuracy during application, facilitating a more natural appearance. It is utilised to replicate the look of small, closely spaced hair follicles on the scalp.

SMP can vary in duration depending on several factors, including your skin type, lifestyle, and exposure to sunlight. Generally, SMP can last up to 3 or 4 years before requiring a touch-up.

Touch-ups may be needed every few years to maintain your desired appearance and ensure that the pigmented dots remain vibrant and evenly distributed.

It's essential to consult with a qualified SMP technician for personalised advice on maintenance and touch-up schedules based on your specific circumstances.

As a Hair & Repair client, we will contact you annually to check in with your maintenance.

Scalp Micro-pigmentation costs are calculated by your personalised treatment package. We design your treatment to account for skin type, any scarring, the thickness and density of your hair, and size of the hair loss area.

Hairline definition, straightening or thickening, patch and scar coverup, full head buzzcut appearance, alopecia coverup, crown density improvement.

If you have an ailment or hair loss concern not listed, please email info@hairandrepair.co.uk so we can find a suitable solution for you.

We tailor treatments to the shape and thickness you want for your hair.

Sometimes we use guides to help you decide:

Norwood Scale for classifying Male Hair Loss

Ludwig Scale for classifying Female Pattern Baldness

During your consultation, we design a hairline shape to your needs, and calculate the level of treatment required.

There must be a minimum session charge so that we can cover the costs of time and materials.

We may ask you to take photos in advance of a consultation call, but usually we will arrange a video call so that you can show us what you need in detail.

SMP offers several benefits, such as:

  • Non-surgical solution
  • Camouflage for baldness
  • Natural appearance
  • Tailored to suit individual preferences
  • Low maintenance
  • Immediate results
  • Suitable for various types of hair loss
  • Boost in confidence
  • Long-lasting

Overall, scalp micro-pigmentation offers a safe, effective, and versatile solution for individuals seeking to address hair loss and improve the overall appearance and boost confidence.

We can apply numbing cream to your scalp to make you more comfortable, but most people don't feel any pain or discomfort. The needles are thinner and smaller than tattoo needles, so scalp micro-pigmentation is usually less painful than getting a tattoo because not every layer of the skin will be reached by the needle.

While SMP is generally considered safe, there are some potential risks and considerations to be aware of:

  • Allergic reactions: Some individuals may experience allergic reactions to the pigments used in SMP. We will arrange for a patch test before your first full session.
  • Infection: As with any procedure involving needles, there is a risk of infection. We ensure all our equipment is properly sterilised, used, and disposed of, and will provide aftercare to encourage optimum healing without infection.
  • Unsatisfactory results: If SMP is not performed by a skilled and experienced technician, the results may not meet the individual's expectations. All our practitioners are fully trained and qualified.
  • Colour changes: As with all cosmetic procedure and tattoo ink, the pigments used in SMP may fade or change colour, resulting in an unnatural appearance. We choose high-quality pigments and encourage following proper aftercare instructions to keep you happy with your look.
  • Scarring: While SMP is a non-invasive procedure, there is still a risk of scarring, particularly if the skin is not properly cared for during the healing process.
  • Regret: SMP is a semi-permanent procedure, and while the results can last for several years, they are not permanent. Some individuals may experience regret or dissatisfaction with the results over time. We will be with you throughout the process of your prep, treatment, healing and maintenance to ensure your treatment heals and remains vibrant for as long as possible.

If you are unhappy with your SMP results, they can be rectified. SMP technicians are unable to remove pigment, however we will work with you to redesign and reconstruct your perfect look. Prior treatments may need to be removed.

The pigment should gradually and naturally lighten over 2-5 years, and can be topped up at any time.

The cost of SMP can be affected by the quality of pigments and equipment used. Premium-grade pigments and equipment come at a higher price compared to their lower-quality counterparts. Practitioners who opt for superior materials and equipment typically charge a higher fee for their services.

Yes! While we do not advise you miss SMP sessions before your treatment is completed, you may reschedule your appointment up to 24 hours in advance. If you need to reschedule for more than 7 days later, we may need to book additional SMP sessions with you or reevaluate your Treatment package.

If you choose to cancel your SMP mid-way through your Treatment cycle may be unable to guarantee final appearance.

Try to avoid any activities which might make you sweat. Avoid washing or getting your head wet for the first three days. Try not to touch your head with your hands or any surface that may be unclean. Do not shave the treated area. Don't apply any product to scalp.

3 Days after Treatment:

  • You must not let your scalp get wet at all
  • Keep the area clean with light rinsing or a wet towel, and blot dry
  • Ensure your scalp does not get soaked or submerged in water
  • If you need to touch your scalp at all, ensure your hands have been washed thoroughly, immediately beforehand

4 Days after Treatment:

  • If you need to shave your head or cut your hair, this can be done LIGHTLY with extreme care after day 4
  • If you choose to do so, we advise you speak with us beforehand
  • We can make any changes to your treatment or healing plan if needed

5 Days after Treatment:

  • Avoid intense exertion or anything that may cause your scalp to sweat
  • You will notice your micro-pigments starting to fade. This is good! This means your skin is healing, and responding well to the treatment
  • Stay hydrated! If your skin is dry, this will slow down your healing
  • Avoid UV light from the sun with a loose hat, and avoid sun beds
  • DO NOT scrub or shampoo your scalp / treatment area
  • Do NOT submerge the treatment area in any bath, pool, lake or other body of water for at least 30 days after your treatment plan has been completed. Chlorine and salt water will ruin your pigmentation design, and the water will increase your risk of infection

6 - 10 Days after Treatment:

You should continue with the same aftercare guide from Week 1 (above), and consider the following as part of your day-to-day routine:

  • Your treatment area may begin to peel
  • DO NOT scratch or pick the scabs
  • Use a suitable moisturiser as advised by your technician
  • You can use an unscented, alcohol-free shampoo if recommended or approved for your aftercare plan
  • You must avoid using self-tanners or any other products until your treatment area has completely healed
  • Avoid exfoliating products or any other kind of bubbling detergent-based products
  • You can continue with light exercise as long as you do not sweat excessively.

10 - 14 Days after Treatment:

  • By now your scalp should be visibly and almost completely healed
  • You can return to your normal everyday skin care routine

Your Hair & Repair technician will be in touch to discuss and complete your healing plan with you and arrange your next session - if you need it!
